KTM®-WoodGrain Finishis a waterborne acrylic/urethane system formulated as a two coat finish for embossed fiberglass, steel or molded wood doors. It was developed after many years of testing.
Step#1 is the “base coat”. Step#2 is the “grain” coat to reach tone.
Dry time is based on temperature and humidity. Avoid temperatures above 95ºF.
Apply the coatings as received. Not normally necessary to thin.
When brushing apply the coating in the direction of the grain.
The overall result will capture the look of depth – as you would expect finishing wood.
Allow ample time for complete drying between applications- painting or packaging.
Clean-up is easily done with soap and water.
Store the product at ambient temperature – avoid freezing.
KTM WoodGrain Finishing:
Start with a thorough cleansing of the door, etc. Blow air to remove dust.
Step#1 can be applied by brush or spray. It is necessary to apply the coating at 3.5-4 wet mils to assure good adhesion and flexibility. Stir – Do not shake the base coat. Stir the contents before applying the coating – if spraying it is best to final filter the paint. It can air dry – time depending on temperature and humidity. Oven baking in an infrared oven can greatly reduce the time needed. An exit temperature on ~175ºF is all that is needed. Temperatures in excess of that are unnecessary and may result in damage to the door. Wood jambs must be cured at lower temperatures to discourage resin ‘pops’.
Allow the coating to dry completely before attempting to apply the ‘grain’ coat.
Step#2 – (The “Grain coat” dries slowly to allow time to complete the entire door and rejoin previously wetted areas)
Grain coat can be spray applied by under-atomizing the paint and spraying an even coat on the surface of the door. After spray applying using a 3” polyester/nylon brush, spread coating around to even off the surface of the door. (proceed to c.)
Grain can also be applied using gloves and an applicator pad. Apply liberally and follow up with a 2” or 3” nylon/ brush to fully distribute the coating into all crevices, etc. Begin to apply the Grain coat onto the panels of the door first (proceed to c.).
Promptly begin to wipe off the excess grain coat using standard paper towels. As the towel collects excess paint turn it to expose clean areas and continue to wipe the surface removing blemishes. As you progress, you will become accustomed with the needed pressure on the towel and do not hesitate to use more towel panels to finish the task.
The time necessary for the grain process depends on the detail on the door or sidelite. The most difficult door should take less than an hour to complete. (Note: Best results obtained when relative humidity is greater than 50%. In low humidity situations work Step-2 in smaller areas of the door, or increase humidity in climate)
Step 2 grain application is sufficient to provide a beautiful and durable exterior coating without the necessity of a clear-coat.
If so desired a clear-coat may be applied over KTM Step #2. KTM-SV is the coating of choice in a multitude of gloss variations from hi-gloss (70 gloss), Hi-Satin (55 gloss), Satin (35 gloss), Lo-Satin (20 gloss), and Matte Finish (10 gloss).
